Slusar's second-period goal earns Thunder berth in Clarkson Cup tournament final
RICHMOND HILL, Ont. - Jenny Potter, Erin Keys and Maggie Fisher had the goals for Minnesota as the Whitecaps beat the Mississauga Chiefs 3-1 on Saturday to advance to the final of the Clarkson Cup women's hockey tournament.
Minnesota will take on Brampton in Sunday's final after the Thunder beat the Montreal Stars 3-2 in the other semifinal game.
Potter opened the scoring in the first before Keys doubled the Minnesota lead on a redirection in the second.
Fisher added another on a breakaway as the Whitecaps led 3-0 after two. Sommer West scored for Mississauga in the third, but the Chiefs would get no closer.
Earlier on Saturday, Brampton's Bobbi Jo Slusar's second-period goal proved to be the winner for the Thunder.
With 45 seconds remaining in the period, Slusar took a Jayna Hefford pass and beat Montreal goaltender Jenny Lavigne with a high shot.
Hefford and Gillian Apps had the other goals for the Thunder.
Noemie Marin and Caroline Ouellette replied for Montreal, who came in as the defending champion.
