Kelby Halbert and Victoria Stevens take GMC Cup overall titles
NAKISKA, Alta. - Michael Janyk became the only winner from last season to repeat at the GMC Canadian Championships by taking Saturday's slalom on the final day of the national alpine ski competition.
The native of Whistler, B.C., now a four-time men's slalom champ, won in a two-run combined time of 1:29.54.
"This is pretty good. I have to try to keep up with my sister," Janyk said laughing, after older sister Britt picked up the 13th GMC Canadian Championship title of her career in Friday's ladies giant slalom.
Montreal's Ryan Semple was second in a time of 1:30.02, while Ottawa's Patrick Biggs was third in 1:30.18.
Kelby Halbert of Bradford, Ont., led the overall men's GMC Cup points race coming in and held on for the title after placing seventh on Saturday.
"It went pretty well," said the 20-year-old Halbert of his week in Nakiska. "The icing on the cake was definitely finishing second (overall) in the downhill. That brought me up and it's great to be the overall GMC Cup champion."
Marie-Michele Gagnon of Lac-Etchemin, Que., took the ladies slalom in a two-run time of 1:32.66, while Erin Mielzynski of Guelph, Ont., was second in 1:33.18. Sterling Silver of the U.S. was third in 1:34.33.
Ottawa's Victoria Stevens finished seventh in a time of 1:37.00, good enough to claim the overall women's title.
"I am really excited to win the GMC Cup. Last year I was close, second or third I think. So to win it this year, it means a lot to come back strong," said Stevens. "I wasn't leading coming to the nationals so I am happy with my results here and wining."
