After falling behind early in the first period, Sarah Davis, Melodie Daoust and Jenna McParland scored goals less than two minutes apart to take a 3-1 lead.

Lacquette and Jillian Saulnier added power-play goals and Kelly Terry scored in the final minute to ice the game for Canada, which will face Germany on Sunday.

"You always want to start a short tournament like this with a victory," said Canadian coach Dan Church, who was happy with his team's overall performance but stressed the need for better defensive habits.

"We spent a lot of time today in the offensive zone, but we need to know when to play defence (in all three zones)."

Olga Sosina scored twice and Lyudmila Belyakova added a goal for Russia.

Earlier Saturday, Finland defeated the Czech Republic 5-1.

In the late game, Sweden edged Germany 5-4.
