Sportswriting legend Frayne dead at age 93

TORONTO - Legendary Canadian sportswriter Trent Frayne has died. He was 93.

The Globe and Mail is reporting on its website Frayne died Saturday morning in Toronto from complications from pneumonia.

Frayne did two stints at the Globe and worked for virtually every magazine and major newspaper in Canada during his half century career as a reporter, columnist and writer.

Frayne wrote more than a dozen books and was a writing member of the hockey, football and Canadian news halls of fame.

He was married to the late June Callwood.

The late Pierre Berton once said Frayne was “likely Canada’s greatest sportswriter ever.”

Phil King, a friend and sports editor at the Globe, said Frayne liked the human drama of sports.

“With his easy writing flair and biting wit, he’s entertained millions of Canadian sports fans for several generations,” King said.
