Can you be a fan of both of the Toronto Raptors talented point guards? One might think it should be possible – they're both young, talented and have been important contributors to the Raptors' success over the past two seasons. Ford has overcome potentially career-ending spinal injuries to pour his heart and soul into the game he lives for. Calderon has overcome the odds of being signed from the Spanish League as an undrafted free agent to surprise everyone with his constantly improving offensive efficiency. There is much to like and root for with both players.

And yet, I don't know a Raptors fan that unequivocally supports both players and thinks that keeping them both on the team makes sense as a long-term strategy. In fact, the prevailing wisdom seems to be that Raptors' GM Bryan Colangelo needs to make a decision this off-season about who he will hand the reins as the point guard of the future and who he will trade to bolster other weaknesses on the team.

The strengths and weakness of Ford and Calderon are well-known and well-documented. Ford is the athletically-gifted, fiery, injury-prone player with a tempestuous personality and a reputation for self-centredness. Calderon is the fundamentally sound, team-first, constantly-improving player with poor defensive skills and an unfortunate tendency to get torched by such NBA luminaries as five-foot-five Earl Boykins. The reasons for supporting one Raptors point guard over the other are varied and often intensely personal.

I've struggled to come up with a compelling analogy for the most intense Toronto-based fan rivalry I've ever encountered, but it finally occurred to me on my GO Train ride into work today. T.J. Ford and Jose Calderon are like Veronica Lodge and Betty Cooper from the Archie Comics.
